چکیده

Considered biologically as well as philosophically, man is a most singular product of the evolutionary process. He receives and transmits not one but two heredities, the biological and the cultural. Man’s biological heredity is very much like that of any other organism; it is transmitted solely from parents to their children, and to other direct descendants. Cultural heredity, or simply culture, is transmitted by teaching, imitation, learning, in large part by means of language.

REVIEW Structural bases of vasopressin/oxytocin receptor function

The neurohypophyseal hormones vasopressin and oxytocin are two closely related nonapeptides, synthesized mainly by the magnocellular neurons of the hypothalamus. Their peptide sequences differ only in the amino acids at positions 3 and 8, but, for both hormones, the formation of a disulfide bond between Cys residues at the 1 and 6 positions results in a peptide constituted of a 6 amino acid cyc...

Co-evolution of ligand-receptor pairs in the vasopressin/oxytocin superfamily of bioactive peptides.

In order to understand the molecular mechanisms that underlie the co-evolution of related yet functionally distinct peptide-receptor pairs, we study receptors for the vasopressin-related peptide Lys-conopressin in the mollusc Lymnaea stagnalis. In addition to a previously cloned Lys-conopressin receptor (LSCPR1), we have now identified a novel Lys-conopressin receptor subtype, named LSCPR2. The...

Discovery of Defense- and Neuropeptides in Social Ants by Genome-Mining

Natural peptides of great number and diversity occur in all organisms, but analyzing their peptidome is often difficult. With natural product drug discovery in mind, we devised a genome-mining approach to identify defense- and neuropeptides in the genomes of social ants from Atta cephalotes (leaf-cutter ant), Camponotus floridanus (carpenter ant) and Harpegnathos saltator (basal genus). Numerou...

Function of the hypothalamo-neurohypophysial system in rats with myocardial infarction is modified by melatonin.

BACKGROUND Pineal and melatonin interactions with the hypothalamo-neurohypophysial system are well documented. In addition, vasopressin and oxytocin secretion are known to be part of the neuroendocrine response to chronic heart failure evoked by myocardial infarction. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the possible regulatory role of melatonin in the vasopressin and oxytocin release i...

Galanin affects vasopressin and oxytocin release from the hypothalamo-neurohypophysial system in haemorrahaged rats.

The effect of centrally administered galanin (Gal; 100 pM i.c.v.) on the hypothalamo-neurohypophysial storage as well as blood plasma level of vasopressin and oxytocin was estimated in haemorrhaged (1 ml per 100 g b.w.) male Wistar rats. Gal i.c.v. treatment did not alter vasopressin and oxytocin content both in the hypothalamus and neurohypophysis as well as their concentration in blood plasma...
